Small rooms do not fail for lack of storage. They fail because the storage is in the wrong place, doing one job when it could do two. Getting the hallway right is a good place to start, because it is usually solved by moving something rather than by buying something.
- Three jobs by the door: keys, post, daily shoes.
- One in, one out, in the same week.
- Divide the wall into three bands: reach, stretch, archive.
- Leave a 2 cm gap behind storage on an outside wall.
Why the entryway sets the tone for the whole home
The entryway is where the day’s objects arrive, and whatever happens there happens in every room. If keys, post and shoes have a home within a step of the door, they stop travelling. If they do not, they end up on the kitchen counter, the desk and the bedroom floor — which is why an entryway that works makes the whole home easier to keep tidy.
The entryway also has the least space of any room, usually a metre or less. That means it can hold three jobs and no more: something for keys, something for post, and something for the shoes you wear daily. Everything else — coats for the season, bags, sports kit — belongs on a wall or behind a door.

Give the door three jobs and nothing else
The most reliable entryway is a strip about 60 cm wide beside the door carrying three things: a hook rail at 160 cm, a small shelf or tray at 90 cm, and shoe storage below 40 cm. That covers keys, post, coats and daily shoes in a metre of wall, and it is the whole system. Anything beyond it belongs somewhere else.
For a family, multiply by people rather than by furniture. Each person needs one hook and one shoe slot, not a shared pile. Named hooks stop the argument about whose coat is on the floor, and a shoe slot per person stops the pile at the door, which is the single biggest source of entryway clutter.
What a wet wall will actually hold
A bathroom wall will hold more than people think, but only if the fixing suits the surface. On tile or glass, an adhesive strip works well and is removable; on painted plasterboard in a steamy room it will fail, and it will take the paint with it. Match the fixing to the wall, and halve the advertised load to be safe.
Depth matters more than width in a bathroom. A shelf deeper than about 12 cm becomes a place things fall from and a thing you knock with your elbow. Shallow shelves, 8 to 12 cm, hold toiletries well and stay out of the way — which is why the useful bathroom shelf is usually narrower than the one people buy.
What to look for in wall hardware
For a small space, three products do most of the work: a rail with adjustable hooks, a shallow shelf on brackets, and adhesive hooks for the surfaces that will not take a fixing. Buy the rail and hooks as a set so the spacing matches — mixing brands usually means the hooks do not sit where you want them.
Check two specifications before buying anything that holds weight. The load rating, which you should halve for real-world use, and the fixing type, which decides whether it will work on your wall at all. A hook that needs a stud and a hook that takes a plasterboard plug are different products, and the packaging rarely makes it obvious.

How to keep a small space working
Small spaces drift faster than large ones, because there is no slack to absorb anything new. The rule that keeps them stable is one in, one out, applied at the door: if something new comes into the room, something leaves it in the same week. That single habit does more than any storage purchase.
The second habit is a daily reset of one surface. In a small home, one clear surface — the counter, the desk, or the table — makes the whole room feel under control, and it is the surface you should protect above all others. Two minutes a day on that one surface is the whole maintenance routine.
When to stop buying and start removing
In a small home, storage has a hard ceiling, and it arrives sooner than people expect. Past it, every new container makes the room feel smaller even though it holds more. The signal is when you have to move one thing to reach another. At that point the only work that helps is subtraction.
Go room by room once a year and ask the two-move question of everything: would you move this to a new home? Anything you would not move is something you are storing rather than using, and in a small space that is an expensive habit. Removing a third of the contents of one room usually does more than any purchase you could make for it.

Frequently asked questions
- What does an entryway actually need? Three things: a hook or tray for keys, a slot for post, and a place for daily shoes. Everything else is optional.
- How do I stop post piling up? Give it one slot by the door and empty it weekly. Post that has a home stops migrating to the kitchen counter.
- How much wall does an entryway need? About 60 cm. A hook rail, a shelf and shoe storage in one strip covers keys, post, coats and daily shoes.
- How do I stop shoes piling at the door? One slot per person, sized to the largest pair. A shared pile grows; named slots do not.
- How much weight can a bathroom shelf hold? A wall-fixed shelf, 5 to 10 kg with proper fixings. An adhesive one, half that on tile and a quarter on painted plasterboard.
